Red Screes

Distance: 13.8km
Ascent: 321m
Duration: 7 Hours 4 Minutes

After some rather significant snowfall overnight we kept local to avoid having to drive anywhere so decided on a hike up to Red Screes from Ambleside and taking in Middle Dodd too. What an epic winter day we were in for!

A few highland cows by the road at the start of the walk.

Heading above the snowline.

AA nice dusting of snow down on the lower slopes. That’s the Coniston Fells to the right with a lovely distinctive snowline.

Looking across to Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes.

And in the opposite direction to the Ill Bell Ridge.

Some snow still falling.

We are about to get lost in the clouds for a bit…

Red Screes summit. No less than 5 minutes after this it cleared but we couldn’t hang around as it was -20C in the wind.

Descending to Middle Dodd.

Stunning views north over Middle Dodd.

Some blue sky showing too!

Breath-taking view back to Red Screes.

The stunning view down to Brothers Water.

Middle Dodd summit cairn and Red Screes behind.

Brothers Water backed by Place Fell.

A view between the col to Harter Fell in Eskdale.

Froswick, Ill Bell and Yoke - all part of the Kentmere Horseshoe.

Looking down Scandale - our route of descent.

Really odd how the path is completely clear of snow…

A stunning panorama of Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes on the descent.
