The Isle of Purbeck forms part of the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site and consists of stunning chalk downs and limestone cliffs that collide with the English Channel in a dramatic fashion. Popular with walkers and holidaymakers, this small area can throng with visitors in the summer months, all set on enjoying the iconic scenery and quaint chocolate box villages. Within this beautiful landscape sits a frequently walked but little known trail called the Purbeck Way covering 27 miles of countryside, woodland, downland and of course coast. Setting out from Wareham, an ancient Saxon village, the trail crosses vast open heathland into the historic village of Corfe Castle, with its iconic fortress nestled between the imposing hills. From here the chalk down is followed east to Ballard Down with an optional and highly recommended detour to Old Harry Rocks before descending into Swanage. The final leg is the longest as it follows the coastal path round Durlston Country Park and along the south coast, taking in Dancing Ledge and St Aldhelm’s Head before turning inland to end back at Corfe Castle creating a spectacular 3 day hike.
