Saxon Wareham

Distance: 3.53km
Ascent: 18m
Duration: 1 Hour 27 Minutes

As we were staying in Wareham I headed on a short walk around the town, following the Saxon Walls and looking for some of the towns history.

Starting this walk down by the river where I then headed to the nearby church.

The lovely church where inside you can find Saxon remains…

A 10th or 11th Century Cross Shaft.

From this church I followed the town walls around to the Saxon Church on the north side of the town.

The Saxon church of St Martin on the Wall. Built about 1020.

Amazing wall paintings and an original Saxon window to the right.

A lovely historic building to visit.

I continued to follow the line of the walls round to where the Castle once stood of which this could be the last remnant of that Norman building. A reused Norman Arch built into the wall.
